K9 Service Puppy Named After Hero Officer

FOX 29 News Philadelphia | WTXF-TV

In Indianapolis, Indiana, police officers are using a four legged friend to pay tribute to a fallen member of their team and a hero.  Renn is a three-month-old golden Retriever, and is named after slain officer, Perry Renn.  Officer Renn was gunned down in the line of duty this past July while on duty.

“Officer Renn was an avid dog lover, and the addition of this K9 will be a powerful reminder of the work that Officer Renn did throughout his career,” said Mayor Greg Ballard, “Everybody is missing him but he lives a little bit. His dog will make a big difference.”

“It’s giving hope to people on both sides of the leash- the incarcerated individual who is training the dog as well as the person living with the disability that will actually receive the dog,” said Indiana Canine Assistance Network (ICAN) Director Jillian Miller, “We want him to grow up and do good work for the community just like Officer Renn.”

Mayor Ballard said, “”It’s been a difficult few months and I hope that this gesture in some small way helps all the healing that has to take place still.”

This is the second tribute being paid to Officer Renn.  A few months back, a young boy started a GoFundMe.com page in an effort to raise money for bulletproof vests, which also stemmed from this fallen officer’s story.
