Two stray dogs from Mexico where walking along the highway connecting Monterrey and Saltillo on Sunday, Dec. 7, 2014, when a vehicle traveling at high speeds hit one of the dogs leaving him for dead. In a country where animal welfare is not a top priority, the chances of the two strays getting help were zero to none, but what happened next was just unexpected.
According to a report published by Zocalo, the dogs, a retriever mix and a dark color mutt, attempted to cross the highway around 11 a.m. when a car hit the retriever mix, propelling him through the air. The dog landed on the pavement, was covered in blood, and cried out in excruciating pain.
The two dogs have probably never seen the inside of a home, have had a healthy daily meal, let alone experienced much loving human interaction, but luckily for them, the shocking accident was witnessed by local firefighters stepped up to help.
The heroic men stopped their vehicle and went over to the injured dog, but when they tried to approach him, the victim’s loyal friend (the dark color mutt), rushed over to his friend’s side to protect him from the strangers. For a few minutes the uninjured dog showed aggression toward the firemen, but once he realized the humans were there to help, he calmed down and allowed them to aid his friend.
The firefighters from Unit 528 requested the assistance of their unit’s paramedics, within minutes first respondents from Unit 633 arrived at the scene to securely transport the four-legged victim to a nearby pet clinic.
The hit-and-run victim did not have to travel alone, his loyal companion and friend hopped along for the ride.
Veterinarians examined the wounded dog and concluded he suffered two broken legs and multiple life-threatening contusions. He is currently being cared for and rescuers hope he will make a full recovery.
As for the loyal companion, he is also being cared for and rescuers hope to find both dogs forever loving homes.
The motorist that caused the accident fled the scene, but thankfully, real heroes and animal lovers stepped up to rescue and care for these two dogs in need.
