Kathy Guminski of Pit Stop Rescue saw Maya on Facebook, and after reading what was on the page she knew she had to act. She stepped in and stopped Maya’s former family from euthanizing her, but now needs to find a real forever home for her, and it’s going to require some special people to care for the disabled dog.
“I saw a post that said ‘Look, if we can’t find an adopter by Friday, we’re going to have to euthanize her,’” said Kathy.
Maya is only seven months old, and has been living in a crate almost the entire time. Born with a spinal deformity, her mobility is severely limited. Her hind legs do not function well at all, and they are weakened from days and days of sitting at a time.
Kathy brought Maya in, and in the short time they have been together, the dog is making some real headway into improving her mobility. A Gofundme.com page set up by Kathy helped get Maya a doggie wheelchair, and with it she can get around a bit.
Now, Kathy needs help finding a home for Maya, but it comes with the knowledge that Maya is going to need some very expensive surgery. It’s a result of being forced to sit in a cage for so long, with the existing spinal issue. An online fundraiser can help defray the costs.
“She’s already going to be somebody’s really good dog,” said Kathy. “They just have to be willing to help her out. I mean eventually I honestly think she might not need that chair.”
Maya does need the surgery, but first and foremost she needs a home with a family that will love her as much as she will love them. Kathy just hopes someone will give Maya a chance.
“I know when they go to the shelter to look for a dog they don’t envision a little black scrawny pit bull that needs a wheelchair, but none of us is perfect,” Kathy said.
