Back in June we introduced you to a dog that was given the name Pig (for the original story, click here). Aside from that being an odd choice for a dog name, Pig pretty much embodies the word strange.
Pig is now one-year-old, and still going strong as one of the most astounding medical situations vets have ever seen. Born with spine so amazingly short, Pig almost looks like a normal dog until closer inspection is had. Then, the differences are very clear.
Doctors were not sure what caused this to happen to Pig, or even how Pig manages to stay alive with such a shortened body. In most cases, Pig’s body cavity wouldn’t provide enough room for all the vital organs. For some reason, in Pig’s case, it doesn’t seem to be a problem.
Fast forward almost a year and one question still seemed to be on everyone’s mind. “What breed/breeds is Pig exactly. Well, the results are in, and it turns out that shares family lineage with many breeds. Pig is part boxer, chow chow and American Staffordshire terrier. That’s correct, Pig is part pit. There were even some interesting trace ancestry links, such as Portuguese water dog and Alaskan Klee Kai.
The people at Wisdom Panel 2.0 say that some of those possible trace breeds being there is what may have led to Pig being shaped the way he is. All of those genetic makeups are there, but not at all are they completely evident.
Well, Pig is going strong, and science is helping up set by set in getting a grip on just what it is that make’s Pig so different from the others. Hopefully Pig and the good people taking care of him will be for quite some time.
