“Lucas and I have fostered eight kittens so far. Seven bottle babies and another current special needs cat,” said Karen. “Yes, Con has gotten hugs from each and every one!”
Things as simple as turning on a light can be quite a challenge for people with mobility issues or other disabilities. This is where the new lever-based light switch comes in.
“Alex spends around three hours each week, usually Thursday afternoons, working with two classrooms of special-needs students at Harris Elementary School in Amherst, said Chip Ingersoll, Alex’s human and trainer.
The testing being done to see if dogs can in fact sniff out cancer in a similar way to the various other organic compounds they have been trained to pick up. So far, the testing has about a 98% accuracy as to dogs being able to detect prostate cancer.
“I’ll be honest,” said Josh's father. “I was one of them that was giving (pit bulls) a bad rep until I met Cletus... He’s just great. I don’t know how many times Cletus saved his life.”
After Major was sure someone would be on their way to help, he then made his way out to the front of the house to wait. He was out at the curb when police and medics arrived, and lead them into the house and right to McGlade, still in distress.
Young patients and their families are having dog visits included along with their regular cancer treatments, and early feedback shows some positive evidence that the interactions are quite beneficial.
“She’s been sleeping on concrete in a kennel her whole life,” said Bos. “She’s going to get to be on the couch, everywhere. She’s going to be living the civilian life.”
