On August 5, 2014, 23-year-old Adrian Garcia from Guayaquil, Ecuador, became a hero when he took his shoes off and climbed over a fence to descend a canal’s steep, concrete wall, to rescue an innocent dog that had fallen in and couldn’t climb out to safety.
The dog’s cries were heard by many locals and they in turn contacted authorities to come rescue the dog. However, while they waited for the nearest fire and rescue unit to arrive, Garcia decided to climb over the fence and make the rescue himself.
The hero man’s brave actions were captured by ECU 911, Ecuador’s national surveillance safety system.
Garcia was able to lure the can closer to him, grabbed the dog by the scruff of the neck, and then slowly moved up the canal’s steep wall. Once at the top, another man climbed over the fence and helped get the dog over the fence and safe back on the street.
“I don’t think I’m a hero,” said Garcia. “I’m only a normal person that did something for an animal in need as I would have done it for any other person in the same situation.”
It is unknown if the dog was a stray or if it was taken to a veterinarian or rescue organization after getting pulled out of the canal. All we know is that thanks to this brave animal lover, the dog was saved.
