On January 6, 2015, Chicago-based rescue organization One Tail at a Time (OTAT) rescued an 85 pound Beagle after the pet’s elderly owners surrendered him to Chicago Animal Care & Control.
The dog’s previous owners could no longer care for him and they made the difficult decision to surrender the dog. Thankfully, OTAT was contacted and the organization pulled the obese dog from animal control and promised to help him get fit and find a new home.
Due to his heavy weight, the dog can barely walk and therefore he was wheeled out of the facility. His road to health will be a long one and he is taking baby steps to change his life. One of the first changes made was to his name, the dog now goes by Kale Chips.
“We’re calling him Kale Chips, because that’s pretty much what his future looks like,” OTAT posted on their Facebook wall. “We’ve slimmed down dogs almost as big as this, so we’re up to the challenge.”
A call for a foster home with little to no stairs was made and soon the chubby dog found the perfect foster family willing to help the Beagle get back to a healthy weight. Many pet companies also stepped up to sponsor the dog’s journey. The Honest Kitchen is sponsoring Kale Chips’ food, Integrative Pet Care developed the dog’s weight loss plan, and Higgins Animal Clinic will be overseeing Kale Chip’s health.
The overweight dog has become quite popular and he is even inspiring others to get fit with him. OTAT started a fitness challenge that benefits Kale Chips and those participating. For more information, visit www.onetail.org/events/team-kale-chips-challenge/
